For 17 years, one dedicated volunteer has been a quiet constant at Altona City Soccer Club, and right now, she is the driving force behind the program introducing our youngest players to the beautiful game. Meet Karen, our NewRoos Coordinator.
Karen's journey with ACSC began back in 2009, when her son laced up his boots for NewRoos. He did not hang them up until two seasons ago, but by then, Karen was already deeply woven into the club's fabric. Over the years she has worn plenty of hats: six years as Secretary, a well-earned break, then a stint as Assistant Secretary. But it is her role as NewRoos Coordinator, locked in for the past two seasons, that has become a passion project.
As NewRoos Coordinator, Karen is the friendly face (and very busy inbox) behind the scenes, liaising with parents, enrolling new players, sorting kits and payments, and reaching out to new families to make sure they feel part of the ACSC community from day one.
It is clearly working. The majority of the club's U7 squads are NewRoos graduates, proof that this is not just about kicking a ball around. It is the pipeline that keeps our club growing from the ground up. And every so often, the program strikes gold in another way: recruiting parents who have played the game themselves and step up to coach.
This season has been one of the program's strongest yet. With JS Soccer Academy now running a professional program, NewRoos has gained real structure, and parents love that a genuine Australian player is involved in the coaching. Word of mouth has done the rest, with enrolments now sitting at 40 players and new enquiries rolling in every week.
But for Karen, the real highlight is not the numbers.

That mix of care, community, and quiet dedication is what has kept Karen at ACSC for nearly two decades, and kept NewRoos thriving as one of the club's most important programs.

Altona City Soccer Club is proud to be supporting young footballers in Bali by collecting used soccer boots for children who do not have access to the equipment they need to play the game they love.

Altona City SC is on the lookout for a passionate and organised volunteer to take on the role of Club Secretary. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference behind the scenes at one of Melbourne's most community-focused football clubs.
The Club Secretary is responsible for the effective administration of the club, ensuring accurate record-keeping, communication, governance compliance, and support for the committee and club operations. Reporting to the Club President and Committee, this role is central to keeping everything running smoothly.
| Administration | Maintain club records, prepare agendas and meeting papers, record minutes, and manage correspondence on behalf of the club. |
| Governance | Ensure compliance with the club's constitution and governing body requirements. Maintain policies, procedures, and assist with annual reporting. |
| Communication | Act as the primary contact between the club, members, governing bodies, and external stakeholders. Distribute club communications and updates. |
| Meetings | Organise and coordinate committee meetings, AGMs, and special meetings. Prepare schedules and ensure documentation is available. |
| Player & Team Admin | Support team registrations, maintain player and volunteer records, and liaise with competition organisers on fixtures and administrative matters. |
Previous experience in administration, governance, or committee roles is desirable but not essential. What matters most is enthusiasm, reliability, and a genuine love for our club and community.

One of the greatest things about our female junior program is the incredible support we receive from our parents. Week in, week out, our sidelines are full of encouragement, cheering and genuine passion for our girls, and we truly appreciate that.
As the season progresses, we would like to ask for your support in one small but important way: please leave the coaching to the coaches.
Our coaches spend a great deal of time preparing training sessions, developing game plans and making decisions throughout the match. Often, there are reasons behind those decisions that are not always obvious from the sideline.
Exactly what you already do so well: encourage, applaud effort, celebrate great moments and support every player on the pitch. Those positive voices help build confidence and create an environment where our girls can enjoy the game and continue to develop.
By allowing our coaches to coach, and our parents to encourage, we are all working together towards the same goal: helping every girl grow, learn and love her football.

One of the highlights of the Altona City calendar is nearly here. This year marks the 18th Annual Tony Cassar Cup, running across four exciting days from 10 to 13 September. The tournament welcomes teams from U7 through to U15, creating a true festival of football that champions participation, connection, and competition at every level.
Final age group numbers and group sizes will be confirmed based on registrations, so early entry is strongly encouraged.
It is the perfect way for your team to either finish off their season or prepare for any upcoming 2026 tournaments. Do not miss out!
